SUBJECT: The First All-Canadian Rose Show
Dear American Cousins,
The Hamilton & Burlington Rose Society would like to extend an invitation to our American friends at the Western New York Rose Society to attend our First Ever All-Canadian Rose Show. The show is being held at The Royal Botanical Gardens on June 21st and 22nd. The Royal Botanical Gardens is located in Hamilton and Burlington, which is about an hour drive west of Buffalo. Direction can be found on their website, www.rbg.ca.
This is a unique show that has never been held before. This is a celebration of the Canadian rose hybridizer. For those of us who live in a cold climate and love the hardy disease resistant rose, this is the show for us. This show will feature all of the Agriculture Canada roses (Explorer, Morden and Parkland series). It will also showcase many of the very hardy historic roses developed on the prairies, (such as 'Therese Bugnet', Canada' s number 1 rose), and many more that now face extinction as many small nurseries close, only to be replaced by the Big Box stores. This show will also allow many local rose hybridizers to exhibit their own seedlings.
We want you to know that developing hardy roses for the north has always been a cooperative effort between our borders. Hardy Canadian roses went into the breeding of Griffith Buck roses. In turn, Griffith Buck's 'Prairie Princess' is in the bloodlines of many hardy Canadian roses. Ping Lim, of Baileys Roses, has used hardy Canadian roses in his rose breeding. For that matter, David Austin has also used Canadian roses in his breeding program to try and increase disease resistance.
The Hamilton & Burlington Rose Society loves all roses, but this year we wanted to try something different. We would love to see you there. For more details you can check the Canadian Rose Society website, www.canadianrosesociety.org. Just click on the All-Canadian Rose Show icon.
Yours sincerely,
Mark Disero, All-Canadian Rose Show Chairman, mdisero@allstream.net
(Remember, while crossing into Canada may be easy, returning to the United
States, even for American born citizens, may be difficult without the proper
documentation, so come prepared.)
